A valve arrester is a device that protects electrical equipment from overvoltage surges caused by lightning or switching operations. It consists of a series of spark gaps and non-linear resistors that divert the surge current to the ground and limit the voltage across the terminals of the protected equipment. The non-linear resistors are usually made of silicon carbide or zinc oxide, which have a high resistance at normal voltage and a low resistance at high voltage. The valve arrester is also known as a gap surge diverter or a silicon carbide surge diverter with a series gap.
